LBYG Food Drive 2021
Ashnith Wickramanayake
Every year, the Sri Lankan Buddhist Vihara Association (SLBVA) hosts a vibrant indoor street food market environment for community members of different races and religions to enjoy various Sri Lankan delicacies.
Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented times of COVID-19, the SLBVA opted to have a Food drive instead. The food drive functioned through the careful planning of the SLBVA and the LBYG Food Drive committee. We used a pre-order system to either pick up from the main pick-up point (Roslea Community Centre) or points in various suburbs.
Our LBYG members helped prepare the food packs, assemble them, and deliver large amounts to different suburbs, from Meadowbank to Penrith. Our members also helped with the practice of COVID-19 safety by ensuring guests were checking in and sanitising upon entry and setting up and packing up the hall after the event had finished.
All in all, during these circumstances, the SLBVA and LBYG could pull off a very successful Food Drive. Hopefully, by next year we will be able to host one of our Food Fairs again.
