In 2022 our LBYG members came together to help with the Katina Ceremony Perahera at the Lankarama Buddhist Vihara Temple.

What is the purpose of the Katina?

During the time of the Buddha, travelling difficulties throughout the rainy season were made aware by monks. Thus, the practice of Vas (retreat) during the three months of rain was established which starts on the full moon of July and ending in October. The Buddha advised monks to dedicate this 3-month retreat to intensive spiritual practice and sharing of the Dhamma with lay people.

During this 3-month period, devotees are given the opportunity to learn the Dhamma from the monks by listening to sermons, getting involved in Dhamma discussions and participating in meditation programs and listening to pirith chanting.

At the close of the Vas retreat, we offer the Katina robe to venerate the rigorous practice of meditation, moral conduct and appreciation for sharing the Dhamma with devotees.

Katina Perahera

For the Katina Perahera in 2022 for LBYG included a large white swan, traditional dance choreography and sesath. The Katina Perahera involved traditional drummers, LBYG swan, sesath bicycles, traditional dancing choreography and the Primary & High School Dhamma School students perahera.

Our Katina coordinators Anupa, Kalpa, Nisali, Kieren and Kingsley Uncle helped lead the Katina workshops this year and helped to deliver the swan and sesath successfully. This year we decided to convert our peacock into a beautiful white swan which was completed by our LBYG members. We also introduced sesath on bicycles for this years perahera.

Our traditional dancing choreography was led by Tiffany and Naomi. We thank Theekshana, Taniya, Tiffany and Naomi for their efforts this year as we were able to deliver another successful perahera. The effort and dedication of all our members who participated in the traditional dance was recognised greatly by many Aunties and Uncles.
