The LBYG’s School Project is an annual initiative that has run since 2009, with the objective to equip as many rural Sri Lankan school children as we can reach with essential resources, so that their basic educational needs are met. These resources include stationery, clothes, shoes and school bags.
Due to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, we could not hold a successful School Project in 2019-2021. However, with lessened restrictions since 2022, we were able to reignite our School Supplies Distribution project, and are ever more determined to continue its success into 2024.
This was the very first time the school project ran. The LBYG raised over $2200 for students of the Polonnaruwa and Ampara Districts.
The funds to support these schools were primarily raised through Cadbury chocolate fundraisers, as well as the generous donations made by our Sri Lankan Buddhist community.
In 2018 we raised over $7400 for 400 students in the Monaragala District, raised through donations and the sale of baked goods and short eats.
In 2022 we raised over $7,500 to support a school in Seenigama, Sri Lanka. For this year we collaborated with Foundation of Goodness to provide essential school supplies to students of Seenigama. An allocated amount of $5,000 was used to fund school supplies for 145 students. A further amount of $2,500 has been estimated for the shipping of 16 PCs that were donated by two LBYG members (Arjuna and Mali). LBYG are still in discussions regarding the appropriate shipping/sourcing of these PCs to Sri Lanka.
