This artwork was inspired by the embodiment of Lord Buddha as a celestial and ethereal being, portrayed through the vivid colours and glowing aura surrounding his body. The Lotus flower is reminiscent of the seven flowers that Prince Siddhartha walked upon at Lumbini Park shortly after birth. The Buddha is shown meditating during the process of Enlightenment, with Mucalinda, the mighty King of Serpents, appearing from beneath the earth to shelter and protect the Buddha during a harsh and vicious storm.
The Earth in the background symbolises the universal understanding that Buddhism is a way of life and a path to attain Nibbana, the release from all suffering. When practising the Dhamma in everyday life, we develop a sense of tranquility and peace of mind. Finally, the ethereal beauty of the Aurora Lights surrounding the Earth, depicts the detachment from the material world and the Lord Buddha’s transcendent qualities.
